Danish national man given suspended prison term for posting nude film clips on the social platform Reddit
A Danish man has been found guilty of uploading sexually explicit segments from protected films and TV series on the social media platform Reddit.
According to a police report reviewed by media outlets, the anonymous man shared 347 clips of nude scenes in a subreddit he managed, which were then viewed 4.2 million-plus times.
Danish authorities confirm he has been given a seven-month deferred jail term for violating copyright laws.
Legal analysts say the man was charged under a seldom-invoked clause in Danish copyright law, with the judge ruling that by taking the scenes out of their original context, the accused had damaged the artists' "ethical entitlements".
He has also been convicted of distributing more than 25 terabytes of protected digital content.
From spring 2022 to mid-2023, the man using the alias "the pseudonym KlammereFyr" on Reddit uploaded adult clips featuring over 100 female performers.
He distributed them in the subreddit he was a moderator of.
According to the Denmark's anti-piracy organization the Rights Alliance, his online community had more than 6,000 subscribers and users were encouraged to request clips of particular performers.
In last year, campaigners reported the case to the authorities on behalf of the impacted actors, directors and producers, which resulted in the forum being closed down.
One actress, one of the actresses whose nude content were shared in the community, explained to local media at the period she felt there was a difference between being seen unclothed in a movie and appearing on Reddit.
The performer said the uploads amounted to "abuse".
'A significant message'
The defendant was arrested in fall 2024 and admitted culpable to the charges last month.
In a comment following the ruling, TRA head Maria Fredenslund remarked the outcome sent an "significant" signal "indicating infringements of creators' rights has repercussions".
The verdict is considered unprecedented in the country for its use of the "ethical protections" clause of the national copyright law, which specifies an creator's creation cannot be used in a manner which violates their standing.
Intellectual property expert Dr Alina Trapova informed the media the legal matter was "rare" for its focus on the damage to the dignity of an performer, rather than to them economically.
The extent to which the ruling could affect other countries is uncertain.
But she added there may be "an increasing number of such cases" in the coming years with the advancement of AI, where "the integrity of one's work might be compromised with greater ease".
