Meteorologists are saying a frosty commencement to the new year, with snow expected throughout a lot of the UK. Celebrants have been told to wrap up as bitterly cold temperatures are forecast for New Year's Eve.

Celebratory Plans Go Ahead Amid Warnings

The Scottish capital's renowned Hogmanay events are planned to take place, following last year's postponement. This is in spite of weather alerts for snow across northern Scotland.

"A chilly New Year's Eve night for those out celebrating, so warmer clothes will be needed," noted the Met Office.

Displays Under Open but Cold Skies

Across the UK, the weather is expected to be suited to fireworks celebrations, with a lack of precipitation and good visibility. Readings are due to be chilly, making additional clothing vital, according to forecasters.

To the north, conditions will be more overcast, but this is not expected to affect visibility for watching fireworks. "We are not looking at low cloud, mist or murk, so you ought to be able to see fireworks, just not stars," commented one forecaster.

Broad Advisories for New Year's Day

Heading into Friday, weather warnings have been issued across Northern Ireland and from Wales, over the north-west, the West Midlands and reaching London and the majority of the south-east of England.

• The public are advised to allow extra time for trips on the road.
• Disruptions and cancellations are likely on the transport network.

The Mercury Forecast to Fall Further

Going into the new year, it will be "chilly no matter where you are," stated forecaster Simon Partridge. Temperatures are forecast to fall even more as wintry showers and strong winds are predicted to hit the north of the country.

Around 10cm of snow could accumulate to have built up in some areas by Friday morning, reaching up to 30cm on the top roads and uplands.

Medical Advisories Issued

Meanwhile, serious cold weather health warnings are in force for the north-east and north-west of England. These are expected to stay active until noon on 5 January, with temperatures forecast to fall to between 3C and 5C.

The health agency explained this meant the weather was likely to lead to notable consequences across health and social care services. This encompasses a likely increase in the fatality numbers among the elderly or unwell or those aged 65 or over.

The message for all is clear: to welcome the new year in security, wrapping up warm is absolutely paramount.
