The British driver Lando Norris Wins First Formula One Drivers' Crown in Yas Marina In Spite Of Max Verstappen's Grand Prix Triumph.
Through an exhibition of gutsy driving, the McLaren driver has won his first F1 world title by taking a podium finish at the season finale in Abu Dhabi. That finish was sufficient for the 26-year-old driver, even though his rival Max Verstappen won the race and his teammate at McLaren Oscar Piastri came home in second.
He delivered exactly what was needed in an extremely intense race at the Yas Marina Circuit, featuring a series of bold passing maneuvers, with flawless execution from both himself and his team.
A Momentous Achievement for Britain and The Team
In taking his first world championship, Norris is now the eleventh British driver to accomplish the feat. This ends McLaren's drivers’ championship wait, which went back to 2008 when Lewis Hamilton last won it. Additionally, it had been 27 years since McLaren achieved the championship double back in 1998.

Verstappen was also exceptional to take the fight down to the last race. He did everything possible in Abu Dhabi with the race victory, but after fighting back from a 104-point deficit mid-season, he fell just short of having the points to catch Norris, ending up just a handful of points behind.
Sealing the Deal with Ruthless Precision
Norris closed out his title with ruthless focus to win the championship that had been so close but eluded him as McLaren struggled at the last two rounds. First a DSQ in Las Vegas and then an egregious strategy call in Qatar.
This represents a significant accomplishment for the driver in his seventh year in F1, each one with McLaren. He remained loyal to the squad even during tough times, believing they would return to the top. That faith was vindicated in Abu Dhabi.
He has done a hugely impressive job to persist with his task, keeping his cool and belief even when under the cosh. After losing the lead to Piastri earlier, he nonetheless worked at getting the most from the car's potential.

The Title-Deciding Race
At the start, Verstappen held his lead through the first corner, but the three title leaders avoided contact. Piastri, starting on the more durable compound, was feisty and made a spectacular move to go round the outside of Norris to claim second place.
It showed the McLarens were free to race, but left Norris under threat from the Charles Leclerc. The first round pit stops saw Norris come out into traffic, but he overtook rivals within a lap and displayed no signs of nerves in his driving.
On lap 19, he made an absolutely bravura move to overtake two cars in one swoop, moving up to fourth and closing on Verstappen's teammate. Red Bull told their driver to hold up Norris, which resulted in a breathtaking assault where Norris burst up the inside, nearly leaving the track.
The incident was investigated by the race officials, with a few impossibly tense laps elapsing before a penalty for his rival and exoneration for Norris settled the matter. This bold move unimpeded was crucial to his championship bid.
Diverging Fortunes
As Norris became the first British driver to win the title since Lewis Hamilton in 2020, the difference in form between the two was pronounced. While the new generation battled over the title, Hamilton, the grand champion, could manage only eighth place in Abu Dhabi, a dismal conclusion to a dismal season with Ferrari.
Making his debut with the Scuderia had been met by enthusiasm but produced what was easily his worst season ever, ending up sixth in the championship without a podium. He has looked jaded in the final rounds and will look to reset over the winter.
